Starting November 4, 2024, there will be a significant change in how immigration residence permissions, IRP are renewed in Ireland.
Online Renewals
From November 4, 2024, all applicants across the country can submit their renewals online using the ISD online renewal portal. This means you won’t need to visit the Burgh Quay Registration Office in person unless it’s necessary.
While submitting you online application you have to upload all required documents with your application. If any documents are missing, your application cannot be processed.
Key Information for Applicants
- Timing: You can apply for a renewal up to 12 weeks before your current IRP card expires. This allows for adequate time for processing your application.
- Processing Updates: You can see the status of your application through the Immigration Service website that offers live updates.

Receiving Your New IRP Card
Once your application is approved, your new IRP card will be mailed directly to the address you provided. It’s important to give a complete and accurate address, including your Eircode. If you live in an apartment, make sure to include your apartment number as well.
Fee Exemptions
Certain applicants may be exempt from the €300 registration fee when applying for first-time registration or renewal of residence permission.
Exemptions apply to:
- Individuals with refugee status
- Those with subsidiary protection status
- Applicants with leave to remain under Section 49 of the International Protection Act 2015
- Young people aged 16 to 18 years
- Residents based on marriage to an Irish citizen
- Family members of EU citizens
- Ukrainian citizens and certain foreign nationals’ resident in the State as a Beneficiary of Temporary Protection.
First-Time Registration
If you are registering your permission for the first time:
- Dublin and Nearby Counties: Residents of Dublin, Meath, Kildare, Wicklow, Cork, or Limerick should continue to book an appointment to register at Burgh Quay in Dublin.
- Other Counties: If you live in any other county, please reach out to your local Garda Immigration Office for instructions on how to register.
